Oregon Wedding

Photographer

Oregon wedding photographer, Sarah Markstaller, standing under a large oak tree at an outdoor reception setup, holding a camera and smiling, surrounded by wooden chairs and white table settings.

Hiiii!!! I’m Sarah, an Oregon wedding photographer documenting wedding days on film and digital for couples who are not trying to turn their wedding into a production.

If you’re the kind of person who’s like “wait… we can just do whatever the hell we want??”

The answer is yes. You literally can and I will be your biggest hype girl about it!

Based in Portland, Oregon but always down to road trip, the coast, Bend, your backyard, somewhere random and meaningful, I’m already excited about it.

Like… fully doing a little dance in my desk chair when your inquiry comes through kind of excited.

Oregon Wedding Photography That Feels Like Real Life (Just a Little More Intentional)

Here’s the thing. You probably don’t want your

wedding to feel like a photoshoot.

You want to:

  • hang out with your people

  • laugh a lot

  • maybe cry a little (or a lot, I’ve been there!)

  • eat good food

  • and actually remember your day

You want it to feel like your life… just with more intention behind it.

Whether you’re planning:

  • a Portland wedding

  • an Oregon Coast day with wind in your hair

  • a Bend weekend with your people

  • or something small and super personal

I’m there for all of it. Not to control it. Not to stage it. Just to document it as it happens.

My Style of Photography, Documentary Photography

I feel like this needs to be said immediately. You do not need to know what you’re doing in front of a camera.

Most of my couples show up like:  “hi we’re awkward pls help” and then 10 minutes later they’re laughing, relaxed, and completely forgetting I’m even there.

Because I’m not here to make you perform. I’ll guide you when you need it but most of the time I’m just paying attention to the way you naturally; reach for each other, laugh at nothing, exist together. That’s the good stuff!

Thats approach to photography, a documentary style, which is just a non-fancy way of saying I’m not about to turn your day into a photoshoot. I’m paying attention to what’s already happening and letting it unfold. Because the moments you’ll care about later?  They’re not the perfectly posed ones. They’re the ones you didn’t even realize were happening.

 Film + Digital Wedding Photography

(aka why your photos feel different)

Okay I could talk about this foreverrrr, but I’ll keep it simple. I shoot both film and digital.

Film is the reason your photos feel like a memory instead of just an image. It’s softer, a little imperfect, a little nostalgic… in a way that’s hard to explain until you see it. These are the photos I’m completely obsessed with (the ones I cry over). The ones I come back to over and over. The ones that make you feel something in your chest before you even realize why. The grain, the way it handles light, the way colors feel a little more lived-in… it all slows things down just enough to actually hold onto the moment.

It’s your mom fixing your hair without thinking about it. Your partner looking at you like “oh my god we’re really doing this.” Your friends laughing in the background while everything else is happening at the same time. It’s not perfect. And that’s exactly why it feels like something you actually lived.

Digital fills in everything else.

The fast moments. The in-between. The chaos. The joy. The things that happen too quickly to plan or recreate. It’s your friends running up to hug you before the ceremony starts. The way your dress moves when you’re walking and not thinking about it. The quick glances, the inside jokes, the moments happening all at once. Digital lets me keep up with your day as it’s unfolding. Nothing slowed down. Nothing missed. It holds onto the energy of it all, the loud, the messy, the emotional, the unexpected.

And when you pair that with film…you get the full story.  Okay wait… that definitely wasn’t as short as I thought it’d be. I get excited about this, can you tell?

From our engagements 6 years ago to our first baby shoot to our most recent maternity and family shoot, we always come back to Sarah. She makes us feel comfortable, is affordable and goes way above and beyond in terms of both quantity and quality of photos. She seamlessly is able to help her clients feel comfortable while taking control and providing clear directions with large groups—something I have seen many “wedding photographers” fail miserably at. Sarah wastes no time and makes sure to set expectations beforehand so she can get every shot you dream of. I am so looking forward to having her take our big family reunion photos in a few months. Thank you, Sarah!!

Sarah took our engagement photos and wedding photos. We couldn’t be happier. she is a true professional and was able to handle the insanely long and complicated shot I crafter for her and while I hate being in front of the camera, Sarah made me feel confident and comfortable throughout the day

She traveled to my wedding in Miami and captured so many beautiful moments. We’ve also one on several hiking trips together and the photos she took are some of my favorite photos ever. She always knows the vibe

Sarah is a legendary photographer! I can’t recommend her enough. I’m not naturally comfortable in front of the camera but Sarah makes me feel so much more comfortable. She’s easygoing and captures so many sweet candid moments. She’s photographed my family at home and my chaotic wedding ceremony at the beach on a crazy windy morning and did both beautifully. Our photos are something that we will cherish forever.
